Social Impact Assessment
The URA carries out Social Impact Assessments (SIA) surveys in 2 stages.

Stage I is a desktop study of the redevelopment project area and its locality based on Government Census & Statistics Department information like the 2001 by-census which would tell us the socio-economic characteristics of the area. We will also analyse local characteristics including business, availability of amenities and welfare facilities, history and culture of the area. All this information will be used for an initial assessment of the potential social impact of the proposed project. The study will contribute to the planning of the project including the provision of facilities in the future development and allow for the potential demands of the affected residents.

The stage II SIA, is based on survey information of individuals in the project area. The information is very precise when compared with the census information. Apart from the personal data, particular attention will be paid to individuals such as the elderly, disabled and single parents to understand their problems and concerns as a result of the redevelopment so that appropriate relief could be provided including the follow-up of the cases with a team of social workers sponsored by the URA.

The SIA studies are central to our "People-oriented Approach to Urban Renewal".
