GDCD and URA Kick off “Flower Market Mini Olympic Games” and Mong Kok Stadium Ticket Stub Promotion Today to Promote Mega-event Economy and Diversified Development in Flower Market

The “Flower Market Mini Olympic Games” (Mini Olympic Games) co-organised by the GDCD Association (GDCD) and the Urban Renewal Authority (URA) was held outside the Mong Kok Stadium today (19 October 2026).  Featuring Flower Market characteristics, sports and charity, the Mini Olympic Games bridged the gap within the communities by connecting Mong Kok Stadium with the neighbouring Flower Market.  Hong Kong’s First “Ticket Stub Promotion” pilot for local football matches was launched along with a range of free public experience booths combining floral craftsmanship, sports and community care were staged during daytime, sparking vitality and sense of community into the district.

The opening ceremony was attended by esteemed guests, including Miss Rosanna Law, the Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism (SCST); the Hon Vincent Cheng, Chairman of the GDCD and Member of the Legislative Council; Mr Lawrence Mak, Director (Planning and Design) of the URA; Mr Pui Kwan-kay, President of The Football Association of Hong Kong, China; Mr Eric Lee, District Officer (Yau Tsim Mong); as well as Ms Helen Chan, General Manager (Community Engagement & Education) of the URA.

Ar Donald Choi, Managing Director of the URA expressed his delight at the success of the event, “The Ticket Stub Promotion connecting the Flower Market and Mong Kok Stadium is a new attempt by the URA.  It encourages the public to experience the diverse characters of the Flower Market while enjoying football matches.  Amid the growing popularity of cross-border shopping and e-commerce, the key to sustaining the Flower Market’s vibrancy lies in giving people more compelling reasons to visit.  Apart from the annual Flower Market Festival, we have been working closely with merchants, residents, schools, and community groups through various workshops, all echoing the aspiration for more distinct experiences.  The Mini Olympic Games is a vivid example of public participation.  The Ticket Stub Promotion marks only the first step in promoting and revitalising the Flower Market.  We will continue to amplify the local characters of Flower Market and support merchants in broadening their operating models, thereby injecting momentum into the diverse development of the district.”

The Hon Vincent Cheng, Chairman of the GDCD, stated that following the success of the Flower Market Festival earlier this year, numerous merchants expressed strong support for hosting more diverse events to boost the local economy.  He also expressed gratitude to the URA and various community stakeholders for their continuous support.  He believed that such initiatives could translate the excitement of sporting events to the economic growth in the community, and hence bringing more foot traffic and business across the Flower Market and its neighbourhood.

Mini Olympic Games Integrating Local Character, Sports, Charity and Social Inclusion

To maximise the momentum of sports mega-event and boost nearby consumption, the Mini Olympic Games featured a series of engaging full-day activities, covering easy-sport experience, retail and dining promotions, and a charity run.  Multiple themed experiential zones combining football and the local characters of Flower Market were staged outside Mong Kok Stadium before the commencement of the Hong Kong Premier League (HKPL) match between Lee Man and Kitchee, drawing families and elderly people.

The event invited Lyson Sze, a renowned Hong Kong freestyle football player and award winner at the World Freestyle Football Championship, to perform freestyle football, showcasing his exquisite ball-controlling techniques and interacting with the public.  In addition, citizens could experience easy sports, including drone soccer, roundnet, cornhole, and light volleyball at the “Floral Fit” zone.  The “Blossom & Football” zone offered photo opportunities with large-scale, floral-themed installation.  Art lovers could further unleash their creativity by joining “hand-painting football” and experience floral-and football-themed face and hand painting, enjoying a different kind of fun in sports and leisure.

Concurrently, a non-competitive charity run “Floral Run for Charity” was launched. Participants set off from the Flower Market to deliver fresh flowers and greeting cards to a nearby residential care home, spreading floral fragrances and heartfelt care across the community.
