Carrying the mission of bringing new life into the historic buildings, surveyors of URA are determined to showcase a sustainable leasing project by incorporating conservation elements and social values into business. The legacy of 618 Shanghai Street is first introduced with illustrations of four core character defining elements including streetscape and architectural merits that make the shophouses the talk of the town. The conservation-cum-revitalisation project has given new life to the last remaining Cantonese verandah cluster in Hong Kong, allowing local residents, different generations of other districts and visitors to have their footprints and stories told at 618 Shanghai Street to which we all belong.

The award recognises outstanding achievement, teamwork and companies. The multi-disciplinary team of Central Market demonstrated a highly innovative and interesting approach to a project of civic, historic and commercial import. This is a fantastic example of a combination between creativity, sustainability, technology and repurposing for a legitimate next phase of what is a very exciting project for Hong Kong.

The Central Market project aims to achieve urban regeneration and sustainable development through heritage revitalisation. URA and Chinachem Group (CCG) adopt a holistic approach that takes into consideration minimising environmental impacts, upholding innovation and creativity, empowering local communities, diversifying culture and economic activities, and promoting inclusiveness and exchange— the spirit of a traditional market and Central. This project has successfully created a popular heritage landmark that injects vibrancy into the district.
