The Kwun Tong Town Centre (K7) Project, commenced in 2007, was the largest redevelopment project in the history of the Urban Renewal Authority (URA) with an area of 53,000 square meters involving 1,600 property interests. In view of the size of the area and the complexity of work, the URA divided the site into five Development Areas (DA1 to DA5). About 100 unauthorized building structures (UBTs) in Yue Man Square (DA5) were found and they had been in operation for over half a century since the 1960s. By adopting a people-oriented approach with an emphasis on sincerity, openness, transparency and compassion, the URA empathetically communicated with stakeholders and walked along with them. With the concerted efforts by the URA colleagues who grasped the nettle, the decade-long impasse was finally resolved.
The URA’s outstanding performance in its stakeholder engagement for the Kwun Tong Town Centre Project was recognised by the Hong Kong Public Relations Professionals’ Association who awarded the URA the Grand Award of Excellence and the Gold Award in the Stakeholder Communications Category at The Hong Kong Public Relations Awards 2018.
